The Eastern State Penitentiary located in Philadelphia was a prison in operation from 1829 to 1971. Today, its a national historic landmark and open to public for tours year round. As hugely intact as the stone walls are from the outside, the inside is a mix of debris, rusting doors, beds and chopping-color walls (it has been kept as a 'Preserved ruin'). It once housed notorious criminals like Willie Sutton and Al 'Scarface' Capone. The eerie feel, the darkness interspersed with little light flowing through narrow windows and roofs and the rubble are a steal for any photographer. I visited the penitentiary today with a friend of mine and here's presenting today's loot:
Cell wing with visitors
The preserved ruins of other cell wings
A little perspective
Al Capone's cell
Another wing
A cell with rubble and and a little light - The cells were all tiny, equipped with just a bed, a toilet and a small window for some light.
A barber shop chair

ReplyDeleteThanks Indiantroy :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sanat. I will take a quantum of solace from the phrase 'things could have been worse'.
